SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies between 1 month and 1 year old in the United States1. About 2,500 infants die every year because of SIDS. Newborns who are the most vulnerable to sudden death are those who change position during sleep and remain in prone position. The position of the infant at bedtime is the most modifiable factor to prevent SIDS. It is suggested that the appropriate sleep position for infants is the supine one. The side sleeping position is a risk factor for sudden death for this reason it is not recommended. The reason that BabyGuard is needed is that SIDS is the leading cause of postnatal death in the United States. BabyGuard will help to stop one of the main causes of SIDS. BabyGuard is to create a crib with monitors and sensors that tracks babies sleep movements and prevents them from rolling to their side. In addition, the bed will have a temperature control sensor that will sense the babies temperature and keep them from overheating. Those can measure both room and the baby’s body temperature, alerting caregivers if temperature go beyond safe ranges. Our solution also make sures that the sheets, pillows, and sleepwear are made of materials that are breathable that promote heat dissipation. We hope that through our project we can reduce the number of deaths and enhancing infant safety with the tools and knowledge to create a safter sleep environment for infants.
