what ultimately needs to be addressed is, “The key factors that contribute to the effectiveness of guidance counselors in schools, and how can educational stakeholders (such as policymakers, school administrators, counselors themselves, and community members) support and enhance the role of guidance counselors to better meet the diverse needs of students?”
Section 1: Introduction
Begin your Literature Review with a well-developed introduction that engages the audience and generates interest in your topic. Use the introduction to frame your inquiry question and provoke the reader’s curiosity about it. Situate your topic and question in relation to the course – make connections to the course content explicit and provide any additional background or context the reader might need to follow your discussion. Assume your audience is someone who is currently enrolled in, or has previously taken, this course. Provide citations (MLA).
Section 2: Body
Summarize, explain, and critique a set of five (or more) judiciously selected sources and demonstrate how they fit together to inform your current understanding of the important ideas, issues, trends, and debates related to your inquiry question. This is where you unpack the research and build your case. The body must include the following two elements:
Body Part A. Annotated Summaries: “Unpack the research.” For each of your five secondary sources and your primary source: name and cite each resource; contextualize (identify where the author is coming from in terms of orientation, point-of-view, time period, relationship to yourself and others, etc.); summarize the content, highlighting the specific ideas that are most relevant to your inquiry; and offer critical analysis and commentary (why did you select it? what are the strengths and weaknesses of this source? how does it fit in with the POV of the other sources? etc).
Body Part B. Synthesis: “Build the case.” Organize your arguments thematically, strategically arranging the five sources to construct the logic and reasoning that results in your conclusion. Use the scholarship to support an informed and evidence-based response to your inquiry question and lay out the conceptual framework for the project. Sub-questions or sub-headings can be a helpful organizational approach here.
Body Format: The body of the piece can be organized in a couple of different ways:
Separate Here the annotated summaries (Part A.) are presented first, separate from the synthesis (Part B.). In Part A, each of your sources (5+1) is summarized, annotated, contextualized, and critiqued in a separate paragraph. This is followed by Part B, in which those sources are discussed in relation to your inquiry question. This is often the choice for people who appreciate simplicity in structure.
Section 3: Conclusion
Use this component of the Literature Review to
Encapsulate the research and analysis, taking the reader through a condensed version of your findings and the logic that leads to your answer to the inquiry question you framed, as well as any other significant findings that resulted from your investigation.
