“On Virtue”
COLLAPSE
As I have said, I am adding Wheatley to this forum to give her works more attention. These prompts ask you to analyze/discuss “On Virtue.” Three to four students may write original answers in this thread. If you choose one of these prompts, be sure to indicate which prompt you are responding to in the subject line.
Prompt 1: Write a paraphrase of lines 1 – 10. A paraphrase is a line-by-line interpretation in understandable language. Do your best to capture what Wheatley is saying about virtue (and also wisdom). O thou bright jewel in my aim I strive
To comprehend thee. Thine own words declare
Wisdom is higher than a fool can reach.
I cease to wonder, and no more attempt
Thine height t’explore, or fathom thy profound.
But, O my soul, sink not into despair,
Virtue is near thee, and with gentle hand
Would now embrace thee, hovers o’er thine head.
Fain would the heaven-born soul with her converse,
Then seek, then court her for her promised bliss.
You can go to the TEXT ONLY. For better or for worse, I ask that you offer your own ideas about your question, NOT analysis found from the Internet. I ask that you respond thoroughly with 8+ sentences. FYI: You are asked to share quotes from the text in your responses, but the quote will not count as part of the minimum length requirement.
