The Villanelle is made of the following:
5 tercets (3-line stanzas)
1 quatrain (4-line stanza)
2 refrains (1st line and 3rd line, repeated throughout)
Rhyme scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa
The most important characteristic of this form is its the repetition of an entire line throughout the poem. The villanelle has two refrains, the 1st and 3rd lines are repeated in the poem in a fixed pattern and appear next to each other in the final stanza:
Refrain: 1_3 _ _1 _ _3 _ _1 _ _3 _ _13
RhymeScheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa
For example, if you read the last words of each line in Thomas’ poem, you hear the a-b-a rhyme scheme: a – b – a a – b – a a – b – a etc.

You can also see the struggle between the refrains:
the 1st line (“Do not go gentle into that good night”) is repeated at the end of the 2nd, 4th, and is the penultimate line of the poem.
And the 3rd line of the poem (“Rage, rage, at the dying of the light”) is repeated at the end of the 3rd, 5th, and is the final line of the poem.
