Here are the details: Trade press are “magazines and newspapers that are written and published for a particular industry” (Cambridge dictionary); they are publications where an industry talks about itself to other members of that industry. Publications such as Variety and TheHollywood Reporter that exist today were originally published in the 1900s and 1930s. This assignment requires you to apply your skills for analyzing trade press to historical documents. Use the Media History Digital Library
Links to an external site. to locate full issues of Variety or The Hollywood Reporter. Select a year you’d like to study (any year/months are fine but defer to your discussion section instructor for more details and potential limits or requirements to your search) and then select 3 consecutive issues of a particular publication to analyze. Be sure to read the entire issue and provide citations and/or links to the issues you’ve selected. Write an essay approx. 5 pages, double-spaced (~1250 words excluding bibliography) identifying and analyzing what you consider to be the most pressing debates discussed in these trade publications.
Your essay should include an introduction and conclusion, summary, analysis, as well as a bibliography. Address the following topics in your paper:
Identify and summarize 2-3 of the most pressing debates discussed in your selected publications
How were you able to identify these debates?
What perspective(s) do the publication and/or its writers take on these debates? Describe and analyze these perspectives; what do they signify in terms of industry strategies, concerns, opportunities, etc of this time period?
How do these debates shape your understanding of this particular moment in media history? Is this a time of transition? invention and innovation?
Did you find anything particularly interesting or surprising about the trade press coverage? If so, what was it and why was it of interest?
What technical and/or analytical challenges (if any) did you encounter when attempting to access and interpret these trade publications?
