The purpose of reading “House on Mango Street” for this class is to examine Cisneros’ fictional writing in preparation for you to write a fictional vignette (less then 500 words) about a social problem, such as the cycle of poverty, marginalized neighborhoods and stereotyped gender roles. She employs metaphor, symbol, and cultural allusions throughout her work.
Writing Instruction (500 words max)
1.) Pick a vignette and discuss how the child’s voice talks about an adult problem.
2.) Eyes of a Child Vignette: Attempt to write your own vignette in your child-self about a social problem that you now understand as an adult. Use Sandra Cisneros
