The goal of the final project is to assist educators in creating a standards-based unit of curriculum to meet the needs of English Learners at the expanding level of proficiency. Each student will complete the project in four steps in order to create a final lesson plan that is standards-based. This curriculum unit will incorporate Content and English Language Development Standards appropriate for an expanding level English Learner student at the grade you teach. The unit must include both formative and summative authentic assessments. The instructional strategies must demonstrate an understanding of ELD and SDAIE methodology. It must cover three consecutive days of instruction, one hour per day.
Step 1
Select ELD and Content Standards
Decide upon the common core or content standards and ELD standards you will address with this lesson. Please visit the California Department of Education website at: www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/ to find a detailed list of standards. Please be very specific regarding exactly which standards are being addressed and design the lessons to focus on acquiring that knowledge.
Step 2
Create authentic assessments.
Your unit must include both formative and summative assessments which will demonstrate whether students have met both the content and ELA standards your lesson will address. These assessments should be authentic in nature and cannot take the form of a traditional test. These authentic assessments may take a variety of forms. For ideas, consult the Diaz-Rico text, Chapter 8. At least one of your assessments must contain a scoring rubric to assist in evaluation.
Step 3
Select and create lesson activities.
You have studied a wide variety of ELD and SDAIE strategies for making content accessible to English Learners. Your unit should include at least two ELD and two SDAIE strategies. Your choice of strategies must reflect your knowledge of these instructional methods and the proficiencies of an expanding level English learner. Note: The specific lesson activities, along with an estimate of the time each step should take should be outlined in the Procedures and Guided Practice section of each lesson. It is very important that this section provide sufficient detail so that any instructor would be able to easily follow it, step by step. Note: You must use the Standards-based SDAIE Curriculum Unit Template to create your unit. This will ensure that all required unit elements are included.
