During an office appointment or during your clinical day observe how the staff is
protecting patient privacy. Be sure to document what you see.
a. In an office setting: observe how staff asks patients information when they
sign in, personal questions related to health care issues while maintaining
their privacy. Include as well as when patients are called into the exam rooms.
b. In a hospital setting: observe how staff asks patient information upon entering
exam rooms, any time patient verification is required, or when leaving the
room for diagnostics. Observe how health care providers discuss patient care
at the nurse’s station. Observe how health care providers discuss care with
each patient – especially in shared rooms. During each of these interactions,
how do health care personal maintain patient privacy.
2. Use the following bolded topics and subtopics (required) to guide the flow of
discussion in your PowerPoint presentation.
• Introduction (one to two slides)
• Define HIPAA regulations and how they apply to the medical
setting or any setting where patients are seen or cared for.
