Think back to our philosophers (Plato, Augustine, Rousseau, Hobbes, Tolstoy, and Pascal). If you
remember, Plato presented us with an allegory of a cave and we discussed several modern day caves that
keep us locked in a false sense reality and away from truth. In addition to Plato, how would some of the
philosophers we have discussed respond to Dorian’s situation? Our poor friend Dorian Gray needs their
help to find his way back to truth. How has Dorian built a cave for himself and what is that cave? How is
this Cave keeping him from truth and what could save him?
Referring to Plato and 2 more philosophers of your choice, explain how each would respond to Dorian’s
predicament.
Be sure to meet the following requirements:
Minimum of 5 paragraphs: an introduction, 3 body paragraphs (1 paragraph per philosopher), and a
conclusion
Discuss 2 ideologies for each philosopher minimum, ie: anthropology, axiology, teleology, soteriology,
etc.
Use compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences (Label 2 of each in parenthesis)
Use 3 vocabulary words from this semester
Notes on Essay Structure:
The introduction will introduce the topic, provide some brief background or discussion for your topic,
and clearly state the thesis, naming sub points that will be discussed in your topic sentences.
Thesis is to be located at the end of the introductory paragraph.
Body paragraphs must follow CEW format, with 2 of your strongest pieces of evidence per paragraph.
Each evidence should be followed by a thorough warrant that clearly connects the evidence to your
claim. This usually takes more than one sentence. You will also need a concluding sentence that
evaluates the point you have made as part of the larger argument, and you will need to transition to
your next point.
Your conclusion should clearly summarize your overall idea and main points. It should also evaluate why
your main point is important, or what is at stake? For example, what is important about the ideologies
presented?
