Please note my dissertation research interests include the impact of alcohol and drug use in fraternities and sororities.
Module 2 discussion will help you apply what you read from chapters to developing early sections of your research proposal. FYI, module 2 discussions were designed to help you to brainstorm your research idea, share your research idea, and receive feedback from the professor and your peers. The professor will provide feedback and comments on your problem statement, purpose of the study, and research questions via this discussion forum.
Part 1: Research Problem Statement
After reading Biddix chapters 1,2, &4 and Johnson & Christensen 1,2,4,5,6, & 21 (from readings of module 1 and 2), spend some time thinking through the range of your potential research topics (if nothing concrete, fine, this is a good time to start thinking!), and identify one that is of particular interest to you and has the potential to be resolved.
Describe the issue/ problem that you would like to pursue and investigate, explain what are the problems around this topic, why it is important, and who would be interested in learning more about the topic. Remember that any research begins in wonder. We start wondering about things that truly interest us, and what we are passionate about. When thinking about the topic, what is your passion? What is it that you would want to explore? What excites you? What are your concerns? We can substitute the words, such as wonder, interests, passion, or concern with just one word – “problem.” Given that you have one in mind, what is your research “problem”?
Then, write 2-4 problem statements. A sample problem statement from my research:
-Studies on international students are still underdeveloped while number of international students are increasing.
-Researchers do not study mental health related racism related to international students. There is a popular population that many researchers study regarding racism, it’s not about international students.
-Mental health has become a serious issue in college campuses and it impacts students’ life negatively.
Part 2: Purpose Statement and Research Questions
Utilize the contents of all chapters that you have read for module 1 and 2 as well as PPT slides that I provided for module 1 and 2, write a sentence of your purpose statement. Universally, purpose statement begins with “the purpose of the study is to examine/explore 0000000” Your purpose statement should include the main research topic and your target population. With your purpose statement, write 2-3 research questions that will cover your purpose statement.
Tips – don’t try to solve a world problem. If you are passionate about a topic, it must be worthy, and there will be others who share the same passion. No matter how good your study is, it will be one that contributes to the topic, so forming and developing your problem into a structure that is compatible and replicable is a good strategy.
Here is a sample purpose statement and sample research questions (my research topic).
-The purpose of the study is to examine relationships among international students’ academic experiences, social life, perceived racism, and mental health compared to their domestic students.
1)What are predictors of international students’ mental health?
2)How are academic experiences, social life, perceived racism, and mental health among international students different from those of domestic students?
