Critical Memo #1: due Saturday, 2/24/2024 by 11:30 pm PT (10% of final grade):
Follow the guidelines for assignments to avoid loss of points in terms of word length, # and full citations, connection between the memo and the citations, editing, etc. In other words don’t rely on the points I am making here if you want a full grade.
Answer only one of these questions that cover week 1-week 4:
1) Is the study of Islamophobia relevant to Ethnic Studies or an added burden the field could do without? If your answer is affirmative, explain why the topic is not included in all ES classes? If your answer is negative, explain how should the AMED curriculum be revised
2) How does the foreign/domestic divide affect our understanding of Islamophobia as a form of hate that undermines the indivisibility of justice? 3) What are the similarities and differences between white supremacy, Zionism, and Hindutva?
4) What are the issues CAIR is concerned about in its March 19, 2020 statement to UCLA? Do you agree with CAIR’s position? Do you disagree? Was such organizing necessary or should it have been ignored?
