1. Review the characteristics of Local Color writing in the textbook readings, and review the videos:
Regional Realism (transcriiption of video in microsoft word is linked)
Mark Twain: Father of American Literature

2. Choose three characteristics of Local Color writing.
3. Write a two-page essay discussing three characteristics of Local Color writing in the story, “Jumping Frog,” by Mark Twain.
4. Use direct quotations from the textbook and videos for the three characteristics. Be sure to cite all source material. For example:
“After the Civil War, as the country became more unified, regions of the country that were previously “closed” politically or isolated geographically became interesting to the populace at large” (Berke, et al).
5. Use direct quotations from the story itself as examples of each characteristic you discuss. For example,
Twain wrote about an isolated mining camp in the story, “Jumping Frog”:
“I found Simon Wheeler dozing comfortably by the bar-room stove of the dilapidated tavern in the decayed mining camp of Engel’s. . . ” (Twain).
MLA format for the paper heading and line spacing is required.

For material used from the introduction in the textbook, please use the in-text citation (Berke, et al). For quotations from the story, use Twain’s name in the citations.
