write a tightly focused analysis of a primary text that forwards an argument about one of the novels we have completed thus far this semester. It should be supported with textual evidence and a close analysis. An analytical essay moves well beyond plot summary and paraphrasing the story. Instead, the essay should offer an interpretation of a specific element of the story. You might consider a tension in the novel, explore a possible contradiction, focus on the novel’s narrative structure, or pay close attention to some other intrigue that remains in your mind.
While there is no such thing as an “objective” reading of the novel, be careful to avoid op-ed pieces. Your analysis should be supported with textual evidence. Feel free to use class lecture notes and/or the critical and context readings available to you.
Your paper might:
offer an analysis of a character or characters (do not simply “judge” a character)
consider the implications of one of the themes you explore.
extend one of our discussion questions into an original argument about the novel.
explore a philosophical debate the novel elucidates.
Ideas to consider:
the tension between individual desire and social obligations
marriage as a social contract
class mobility
representations of desire
social initiation rituals
representations of masculinity
geography and movement
