Negative News Memo Assignment
For this assignment, you will again use ChatGPT, this time to compose two short memos, both of
which will be included in the same document. You should label them “Memo 1” and “Memo 2.”
The body of each memo should be between 150-200 words. Here are the guidelines:
Memo 1
You will deliver bad news in a

direct way

to a supplier whose services you will be dropping in
favor of a better contract with another company. For this exercise, you will make up a client
whom you’ll be addressing, your company name, their company name, etc. Be specific, so that
we understand the context.
Memo 2
You will deliver bad news in an

indirect way

to an employee who works for you. You can
decide the nature of this bad news. You can, for example, tell them that they’ve laid off or that
all of their projects for the upcoming quarter have been unfunded. You will also make up the
employee’s name, your company name, etc. Be specific.
As with the Routine and Persuasive memos, you should also include in your final document the

Be sure to read about direct and indirect messaging in your textbook. If ChatGPT is not able to
format your memos correctly, you will have to rearrange them so that information is provided in
the correct order.
As always, your memos should each contain a header including TO, FROM, SUBJECT, and
DATE.
One last tip: your SUBJECT line should not give away the nature of the bad news when using
the indirect method. If you’re trying to let someone down gently, you don’t want to tell them in
the SUBJECT line what the bad news is.
