As an autism specialist, you will often be called upon to assist with developing and communicating plans for implementing AAC supports and strategies to meet the needs of students with ASD. These plans are aligned with the IEP goals and recommendations related to accommodations and modifications that will help the student achieve the desired outcomes. The ability to clearly articulate the plan to all stakeholders can help to ensure understanding of the specific supports and strategies that will be used and encourage compliance from all stakeholders.
Read the case studies for Thalia and Panya located in the “Autism Programmatic Case Studies.” Select one of these students and formulate a plan that explains how you will modify verbal and nonverbal communication and instructional behavior to meet the unique needs of the selected student. Consider all of the communication strategies and assistive technologies you have studied in the course and implemented in your clinical field experiences.
Create a 3-5 minute video that demonstrates how you will explain the plan to the identified stakeholders. The video should address the following:
Identify the stakeholders who are being addressed in the student’s plan.
Summarize the selected student’s language and communication challenges.
Describe how stakeholders can modify verbal and nonverbal communication and instructional behavior to meet the needs of the student. Include a discussion about how you will ensure ethical practice and ADA compliance when making these modifications.
Explain the specific AAC supports and strategies that will be implemented to assist the student in both structured and unstructured environments, including the home, and justify each selection by explaining how it provides and improves support for the student.
Note: If you have access to the actual AAC device or a photo of it and would like to showcase this in the video, feel free to do so.
In addition to the student’s plan, explain how all stakeholders involved in the student’s plan should model challenging expectations, respect, and ethical practice for individuals with ASD.
Remember that video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and that the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.
