ASSESSING READING PROFICIENCY
Choose 1 or 2 students and find out their WIDA ACCESS or WIDA Screener proficiency levels for reading. Look for evidence that is indicative of the reading domain for their English proficiency levels. Provide an analysis of their abilities for the reading domain.
What was the topic of the reading? What word(s) did your MLLs have difficulties pronouncing? Why were those words difficult for them to pronounce? What words did they have trouble understanding? Include a picture of a reading that they read aloud or a reading prompt that they responded to (short essay, drew a picture, multiple choice, etc). What language proficiency level did their responses indicate? Provide a rationale for your placement level.
Were the activities used in the classroom aligned with the MLLs’ proficiency levels? How or how not? Explain. What do you think could have been done differently?
Include the WIDA CAN DO domains for your MLLs’ grade level and provide evidence for each descriptor of what you noticed that your MLL can do at that proficiency level.
All field notes should be written in a narrative form. Do not include the questions in your notes.
