You will write a critique of a peer-reviewed journal article that meets the following criteria:
• It is a source that you will cite in your research prospectus (Anxiety and children)
• It summarizes one single research study and is comprised of an introduction, method section with measures, results section, and discussion.
• It is not theoretical in nature, a meta-analysis, or a literature review.
• It is a peer-reviewed journal article from the field of psychology, counseling, or social work. • It is not from a medical/psychiatric or nursing journal.
REQUIREMENTS
The critique will consist of a title page, summary, critique, conclusion, and references page. The critique section will consist of the following three subsections: internal validity, external validity, and reliability and validity. Each section will be 1+ paragraphs, and each critique paper will be 3–5 pages (double-spaced, not counting the title page and references page).
Title Page. Include the following five elements: running head, page number, full title, author’s full name, name of the sponsoring institution.
Summary. The summary starts on a new page following the title page. For formatting, treat the summary as you would the introduction of a research report; that is, at the top of the page, provide the title of the paper and do not include a heading. Keep the summary brief, providing the following information:
• The name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the article • The problem or issue
• The hypothesis and/or research question(s)
• The main conclusions/findings.
Internal Validity. Internal validity refers to the ability to draw conclusions about cause and effect. Select several features of the study and review their strengths and weaknesses.
For each feature addressed, provide a descriiption/definition, and then present the critique, referring to specific details from the study.
Table 2.1 in Chapter 2 of Martella et al. lists threats to internal validity, and Table 2.2 identifies chapters that cover threats to internal validity for various research designs.

External Validity. External validity refers to the ability to generalize to other populations and/or settings. Select several features of the study and review their strengths and weaknesses.
For each feature addressed, provide a descriiption/definition, and then present the critique, referring to specific details from the study.
Table 2.3 in Chapter 2 of Martella et al. lists threats to external validity, and Table 2.4 identifies chapters that cover threats to external validity for various research designs.
Reliability and Validity. Select several features of reliability and validity of the measures used in the study and review their strengths and weaknesses.
For each feature addressed, provide a descriiption/definition, and then present the critique, referring to specific details from the study.
Chapter 3 of Martella et al. covers concepts related to reliability and validity of measurement.
Conclusion. Assess the results and conclusions of the study. To write this section, you may review the results section of the article, but you will certainly assess the results and inferences that are presented in its discussion section. To develop this section, consider the following questions:
• Do the results in fact support (or refute) the hypothesis? Explain why or why not. • Are the conclusions justified by the results? Explain why or why not.
• What alternative conclusions or explanations are possible? Describe them.
• Do the results have real-world applications? Explain.
References page. The references page follows the discussion section, starting on a new page. At the top of the page, type the heading “References” in centered, bolded text.
• List the article you are critiquing.
• Use proper APA formatting style (use an online guide such as Purdue Owl). • Use a hanging indent and double spacing.
