Remember the following Essay Format Tips
Introduction Paragraph:
This paragraph introduces the topic and ends with a clear thesis statement. Include the following in order:
A “hook” to get your reader’s attention. This can be an interesting a surprising statement, an anecdote, a quote, or a statistic.
Background information about your topic. Briefly explain your topic for your audience. Why is your topic important? Why are you talking about it?
The thesis statement should make a clear claim about your topic (attitude or angle) and should include a plan of development. It should be the last sentence in this paragraph.
Information Chunks:
Create information “chunks” as needed. These chunks will focus and support a specific point that supports your thesis. Individual body paragraphs within each information chunk should begin with clear topic sentences that act as an umbrella statement for that paragraph.
Start each information chunk with a sentence that introduces the subject of that chunk.
Include evidence gathered from your research, with appropriate in-text citations.
Create logical links between ideas, reflecting the relationship between research and your own ideas.
You might want to include a paragraph with more extensive background information about your topic in the body of your essay. This would be in addition to including brief background information about your topic in your introduction paragraph. If so, this should be the FIRST paragraph in the body of your essay before any of your main points about your topic.
You might want to address the opposing point of view, if you are making an argument. If you are just informing your audience, this is not always necessary.
