Week Four: Assignment

Instructions
All weekly assignments are due at the end of each week’s session, which is 10:00 PM PST Saturday of each week. Written assignments should be submitted no later than 10:00 pm PST Saturday of each week. There will be 5 questions each week, each one worth 2 points for a total of 10 points each week and a total of 40 points for the course. There will be NO credit given for assignments posted after 10:00 pm PST.
Each assignment must include: week number, student name, and question numbers. Each assignment should be between 2 and 4 pages, double-spaced with 12 point font. Assignments must be completed in a Word document and uploaded for submission. No credit will be given for incorrect answers. There will be no credit for assignments turned in after the deadline of each week.
Answer the following questions:
What are the five major sentencing philosophies and how are they unique from one another?
What are the problems with incarceration as the primary sentence? What if any changes would you recommend and why?
What sentencing philosophy supports your favorite alternative?
What is the difference between disparity and discrimination? Why is it difficult to determine if discrimination exists in sentencing?
Discuss the difference between plain error, reversible error, and harmless error. Include a discussion of the impact that these different types of error have on appeals.
