By this time in the course, you will have identified a professional to interview within your community, reviewed one community that is deemed “recovery ready”, and begun to consider what level of recovery readiness your community has reached. Review the Week 8 Final Community Readiness Project before progressing with this assignment. We’ve provided some examples of Community Assessment Outlines in last week’s optional reading section; feel free to model your own outline off of any of them. Your outline does not have to directly copy them, but should have similar components.
This week, you should continue with your research and planning. Briefly outline your plan for your presentation, including an annotated bibliography of at least 5 sources. These sources can be demographic/statistical sources, governmental, theoretical frameworks related to advocacy, or anything else you think is vital for your Community Readiness for Change Project. List the source and a one paragraph explanation of the source and how you intend to use it. The next part of this assignment will be the final presentation, so use this as a week to plan and prepare.
Include both the outline and annotated bibliography in one document.
This is week 8: Week 8 Final Community Readiness Project
(a little info I have is I’m doing CT), I I am planning on interviewing Jacquelyn Batte for my community readiness project. She has an MS in community psychology. I thought Jacquelyn would be an ideal person to interview, given her various experiences with substance use disorders. In her most recent role as a therapist, she provides therapeutic services to clients in a 1:1 setting as well as providing group sessions. Often times, her clients are referred from court or probation systems. Jacquelyn’s role is a vital part of the community’s approach to substance use disorder treatment. The interview will take place on November 28th, 2023, where I will learn and gain insights from her personal experience with substance use disorder treatment, from the challenges she has faced to the successful strategies she has employed in helping her clients achieve lasting recovery.
Research your local community and state through a micro, mezzo, and macro lens to identify what is available both in person and online for those impacted by substance use disorder. Note: if you live in Portland, ME select another community of your choice as we already did an assessment of Portland in Week 4.
Use the skills you’ve developed in this course to analyze and discuss if your community is recovery ready. Use the case vignette to show how the individual and family might fit into your community and how you would begin to advocate for them. In your presentation please address the following:
Did your assessment of your community determine if it is recovery ready or not?
What are the Identify strengths, needs, and barriers in your community with regard to implicit bias and readiness to change?
What resources are available in your area, either online or in person and online to support individuals and families experiencing substance use disorder (self-help – there are all kinds and it is not limited to AA, inpatient, outpatient, partial hospital programs, detox, intensive outpatient, sober living, syringe exchange and other harm reduction methods, medication-assisted treatment, etc)?
Explore the age of consent to treat in your state as it relates to HIPAA CFR 42 Part 2 and the rights of those receiving SUD treatment services across the lifespan. What is the age of consent for a minor in your state/territory/province for the treatment of minors experiencing substance use disorder?
Develop and discuss an advocacy strategy for your community.
What preliminary steps could you start to begin advocating?
What are your overall recommendations for intervention(s) for the individual and family in your community given what is available, from the case vignette provided (“Jacinta”)?
What do human beings need for our own “Rat Park” in order to not just survive, but to thrive?
Additionally, take some time at the end of your presentation to reflect on the following:
How have your biases and beliefs about substance use disorder changed after taking this course?
What is one way you will take action to reduce stigma and promote positive change in your community to elevate substance use disorder treatment and practice?
Your presentation should be 15-20 minutes in length and use properly cited resources from the class and your own research. Your presentation should appear as a visual training with voiceover (powerpoint, etc), run smoothly and free from technical difficulties, etc.
