Argumentative Essay Instructions
Based on the materials we have covered about how to write an argumentative essay, you will write a 1200 word essay in which you argue for or against a controversial topic of your choosing.
You need a minimum of 8 paragraphs (introduction, 5 body paragraphs, a counter-argument paragraph and a conclusion). This essay will be done in pairs, and you will be evaluated using the rubric which will be available on Canvas after we come back from the break.
I would also like you to include a research aspect. Library research should be used to find and support arguments for/against your topic. However, keep borrowing to a minimum and use your own ideas more. MLA documentation style will be introduced in the class so you know how to cite your sources.
I would also like you to device a short survey (2-3 questions) so you can use its results to support your arguments. The first draft is not graded but extremely important for receiving feedback so you can improve your second (and last) draft. The first draft of the argumentative essay is due October 28th in class and you will email it to me with the subject line “Argumentative Essay Draft 1”.
In our last session before the break, we’ll write a couple of argumentative paragraphs for practice and then select the topic for the graded essay. Over the break, think of possible sources to use for supporting your arguments and make sure to summarize and take note of these sources. When we come back from the break, we will work on survey questions, how to analyze them and present the findings in the essay.
