To demonstrate mastery of a particular critical method or methods and apply that method to critically analyze a rhetorical artifact.
Directions
Using the artifact (TED TALK, “lets talk about dying” Dr Peter Saul) choose the method (ideological criticism and genre criticism) that will allow you to critically analyze the meaning and effectiveness of your artifact.
Criteria
This final paper will include the following sections:
A. An introduction that outlines your main thesis/argument, introduces your artifact and justifies its worthiness for analysis (2-3 pages).
B. A literature review that reviews the method and/or the concepts or themes addressed in your artifact (3-5 pages).
C. A detailed analysis applying the method(s) to your artifact (7-10 pages).
D. A conclusion that reiterates your argument about what the artifact means, your evaluative judgment on it’s effectiveness or impact on society (i.e., why it matters), and a discussion of limitations of your analysis and what future scholars might consider (i.e., what didn’t you look at or consider that others might want to think about doing when analyzing this artifact) (3-5 pages).
This paper will be 15-20 pages (approx. 4500-6000 words), double-spaced. It will have a cover page and an abstract of at least 100 words, with a running header with an abbreviated title (i.e., “Playing for the Masses: The Use of Music in the Venezuelan Protests” becomes “Playing for the Masses”). The paper will be carefully proofread for grammar, spelling, and paragraph structure (you will be asked to peer review a classmate’s essay to help them with content and structure
