This Second Book Report Is For Two Books:
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and
The Life of Frederick Douglass:
(See the calendar page for when this is due)
This Second Book Report covers two books, Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass,
AND The Life of Frederick Douglass. Both are on the same topic, but are remarkably different. You
will compare and contrast the two books: one is autobiography, the other, a “graphic novel.” Discuss
them by answering the two sets of questions below. Use evidence, quotes and examples from each book to
“prove” your comments. Judge which is better, and why. Which would be best for this class? If I only use one
of them, which should I stop using?
This two-part report is a minimum of six pages, double spaced.
The First Part: In this part, each book is discussed separately. Answer the questions listed below
for each book. First answer both questions for one book and only then answer the two questions for the
other book.
1. What was the purpose of the book, why was it written, and how successful was the author in
achieving that purpose? (Give evidence, quotes and examples, to support your opinion)
2. What was the most interesting and/or important part of the book?
3. Was any part of the book unnecessary? (What would the book have been better without?)
4. What (If anything) did you learn? OR what stopped you from learning? Can you relate material
in the book to either the study of history or to your life? Can you recommend the book?
Why/why not? (Give evidence, quotes and examples to support your opinion.)
The Second Part: answer the following questions by comparing both books together.
1. Which book did you enjoy the most, why?
2. Is one of the two books superior to the other? How? Why?
3. How are they different from each other?
4. Is one more interesting or more informative then the other?
5. If only one was used for the report, which one would you chose? Why?
6. What in these books surprised you? Worried you? Offended you? Made you smile?
Please note: If you find any useful sources online that relate to either book, you must list them and
note them. If you use quotes from these sources or simply “borrow” their ideas or examples, you
must say so! If you don’t cite or acknowledge your outside sources, that is Plagiarism, and you will
unfortunately earn a 0/F grade for the report.
