An Attack that United the Country
9-11 was tragic day that united the country. The world trade center was the work place of hundreds of people; When the terrorists attacked all these important U.S. places and all those people were killed the country came together to support each other through sadness and grief. Although this day was tragic and so many lives were lost, this day brought the country together more than ever. On September 11, 2001 Terrorists Hijacked four planes. Two planes crashed into the each of the Twin Towers of the world trade center, a separate plane hit the Pentagon, and fourth plane that was presumably headed for the White House or the U.S. Capital was crashed into a field in Pennsylvania by the heroic passengers on the plane killing everyone on it. Although the official ruling of 9-11 was a terrorist attack this topic is still very controversial to this day. Some don’t think that it was a terrorist attack, and that it could’ve been the government or someone higher up.
The attacks were caused by Islamic extremists that hated the United States; They were led by Osama bin Laden, who was the leader of the organization Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda was an organization founded by Osama bin Laden to continue the cause of jihad (holy war) through violence and aggression after Soviet forces were defeated and withdrew from Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden thought that America was weak. He and the other hijackers hated America and nobody really has any idea why. There were 19 hijackers that were inspired by Al Qaeda. 4 of the hijackers were trained pilots, so it wasn’t hard for the hijackers to fly these planes into there intended targets. “They were inspired by al Quaeda, whose leader Osama bin Laden was sheltered in Afghanistan and linked to the leaders of the new Taliban government.”
Two planes hit each of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one crashed into the Pentagon, and one crashed into a field. 2,753 people died at the World Trade Center, 343 of which were firefighters, 184 people were killed at the Pentagon, and 40 were killed in the field in Pennsylvania. Although the exact number of victims, particularly the number of those killed at the World Trade Center, is not definitively known, the official death toll, after numerous revisions and not including the 19 terrorists, was set at 2,977 people. The passengers on the plane that was supposed to hit the White House fought back and saved many lives though they lost their own by taking control of the plane, overpowering the terrorists, crashing into a field instead of the White House.
The official ruling of 9-11 was that it was a terrorist attack by an organization that Osama bin Laden created, and since Osama was the leader of al Qaeda and had connections to the Taliban government in the middle east, America blamed it on them and it created war in the middle east. Al Jazeera broadcast an audio tape purportedly from bin Laden. Shortly before the US presidential election in 2004, in a taped statement, bin Laden acknowledged al Quaeda’s involvement in the attacks on the US, and claimed a direct link to the attacks. Bin Ladens goal was to drawn the US into large scale war in the Muslim world that would overthrow the existing world order and establish a single Islamic state.
People had a difficult time believing that such a small group of people or terrorist could create such a large tragedy. They felt it would take many people or a large government to plan such a large attack. “The US intelligence community viewed Bin Laden as a financier of terrorism, not a terrorist leader.” A tragic event like 9-11 was more likely to be caused by a government than a few terrorists. Many people also didn’t believe that the planes could even do that much damage and that the whole thing didn’t really make any sense, people believe that there had to be something else and not just the planes hitting the buildings.
The 9-11 terrorist attacks brought grief stricken Americans closer together to fight terrorism. The public initially came together to support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. 9-11 is a day that changed our world forever here in the United States. Although the official ruling of 9-11 was a terrorist attack this topic is still very controversial to this day.
