Think about some area of success you are interested in. Not sure where to start? Here are
some ideas:
1. Academic/school success/achievement/performance
2. Motivation
3. Goal setting or goal pursuit
4. Relationship success or satisfaction
5. Life satisfaction
B. Once you’ve got that, think about personality trait(s) you believe predict that success outcome.
1. Example:
a. Let’s say you’re interested in perseverance after failure. In other words, you
are interested in researching people who keep trying to achieve a goal after
they have failed in some way. Perseverance would be your success outcome.
b. Now, you need to come up with trait(s) that you think are related to higher
perseverance. How about conscientiousness?
2. If you are going to pick multiple traits, make sure they are related in some way. Don’t
pick too may traits or else you will risk your final paper sounding too disjointed or
disconnected
go to the UHD online library database. You should do a keyword
search and narrow from there. Make sure you are using psychology databases. I recommend:
1. PsycInfo
2. PsycArticles
3. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection
B. Find FIVE journal articles that have specific relevance to your topic. These articles must be
from peer-reviewed, empirical journal articles.
1. You may NOT use magazines, webpages, blogs, Psychology Today, Wikipedia,
newspaper articles, or any other source that is not a peer-reviewed, journal article.
2. I suggest you select the option “Peer-Reviewed Journals” to filter out the unusable
sources.
C. You should focus on how both your topic and your variables have been addressed in the previous
work.
1. You may have to review/skim many articles (i.e., more than 5) before finding the FIVE
articles that are most pertinent to your topic and will be used in your final annotated
bibliography.
2. You must ask yourself, “What is the importance of this article to what I am studying?” and
“What interesting information does this article give me that I can use in my paper?” If you
can’t answer these questions, then you should not include the article.
At the start of your annotated bibliography, you need to clearly state your topic. Give the trait(s)
and success outcome you have selected and how they are related.
B. Write the reference for the article using APA format.
1. Here is the general format for referencing a journal article:
Format:
Author, A. A. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number,
only if each issue begins at page 1), pages.
Sample:
Negriff, S. (2019). Depressive symptoms predict characteristics of online social networks.
Journal of Adolescent Health, 65(1), 101-106.
2. The format will be slightly different if the article has multiple authors. There are resources
available on Canvas.
C. Write the annotation (summary) of the article
1. Your annotation should follow the main parts of a research article (i.e., introduction,
method, results, and discussion).
2. For each annotation, you MUST include all of the following:
Theories of Personality
3
a. Introduction: Write one or two sentences that address the research
topic/purpose of the paper and any specific hypotheses that are being tested.
b. Method: Write one or two sentences that state how many participants, any
important characteristics of the participants, and what materials/procedures were
used.
c. Results: Write one to three sentences that present results for the research
question/hypothesis presented in “i” above. In other words, the introduction
presented one or more questions, now you give the answers to the questions.
d. Discussion: Write one or two sentences that present the implications and
importance of the results.
D. Please note that you may not use the abstract or any part thereof as your annotation (summary).
Anyone who includes all or part of an abstract in their annotated bibliography will receive zero
points for the assignment and possibly a failing grade in the class.
E. Your annotations should be paraphrased! This means that each summary should be written in
your own words
paper should be formatted according to the following guidelines:
Use APA format (i.e., typed, 12-pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced and 1-inch margins all
around)
Use APA format references. See the provided resources on Canvas for information on how to
format references.
Paper length: 2-3 pages (only the annotations/summaries are counted toward the page count)
