The researched academic argument essay is to be a nine to ten page written argument which forwards an argumentative thesis based on your analysis of the focal issue or controversy you’ve been studying. The primary challenges of this project will be 1) to coherently organize your ideas, 2) to incorporate source material that supports those ideas fully through paraphrase, summary, and quotations, 3) to document those sources in-text and on a works cited page using a particular documentation style, and 4) to persuasively convince your audience through the use of rhetorical appeals.
Another challenge of this assignment is to demonstrate that you have developed a strong knowledge base regarding the issue or controversy you’ve been studying. This is often demonstrated by acknowledging multiple perspectives in your argument, either by introducing readers to the debate or by anticipating counterarguments and objections.
When writing this essay, decide from the outset what kind of argument you want to make: an argument to convince, to persuade (call to action or change a point of view), to define, to evaluate, to show cause and/or effect, or to identify a problem and then propose a solution. Based on your audience (which is members of the academic community), your purpose, and your chosen subject, you will have to decide what appeals – logos, ethos, and pathos – you will focus on, and how you will integrate those appeals effectively into your argument.
