The following reading assignment is about confusion in relation to writing assignments in undergraduate education, specifically the confusion students can feel when being asked to write in different genres in service of general education requirements, genres which may be associated with different rule sets that seem to contradict one another and can lead to feelings of cynicism about education (i.e. just writing for the grade and/or what the teacher wants).
Please read and annotate the “clipped” version of the article (I cut about half of it out) with your focus on the ways in which students experienced the contradictions between Corey’s assignments and the rest of their education. Why could writing in different genres create feelings of cynicism in students?
