Steps of the process:
1. Select a quantitative research article (this is extremely important. Please do not use an opinion article, another non-research article, or a qualitative study. (You can choose Language barrier in healthcare and how it affects patient care)
2. Appraise the article critically
Introduction
• Introduce the title of the article, why it was selected, and the topic of the research.
• Describe the type of research utilized in the article (Qualitative, experimental/quasi-experimental, Correlational, Descriptive).
• Describe when and where the research was conducted.
• Utilize a thesis statement for the paper.
Research Problem and Purpose
• Why is the problem significant to nursing?
• How did the study problem and purpose generate or refine knowledge for nursing practice?
Literature Review/Introduction
• How current is the literature review?
• How does the literature review provide rationale and direction for the study?
• Was a clear, concise summary presented of the current empirical and theoretical knowledge in the area of study? Why or why not?
Study Framework
• What was the framework/theoretical basis of the study?
• What nursing theory was utilized for this study?
• If a content map or model was presented, was it adequate to explain the phenomenon of concern?
• If a proposition from a theory was tested, was the proposition clearly identified and linked to the study hypotheses?
Research Objectives, Questions, or Hypotheses
• How were the objectives, questions, or hypotheses expressed?
• How were the objectives, questions, or hypotheses logically linked to the research purpose and framework?
• How were the research objectives, questions, or hypotheses linked to concepts/variables and relationships from the framework?
Variables
• What are the study’s variables (Independent, dependent, etc.)
• Were the variables clearly defined?
• How was the conceptual definition of the variables consistent with the operational definition for this study?
Method/Design
• What type of quantitative research was used for this study? Explain.
• How were study subjects selected?
• Were any subjects excluded from the study based on age, socioeconomic status, or race, without a sound rationale?
• If more than one study group was used, do the groups appear equivalent?
• How were the rights of human subjects protected?
• Was the setting used in the study typical of the clinical settingwhere the intervention could be used?
Measurements
• What are the instruments that were used to measure variables?
• How was the reliability/validity of the instruments verified?
Data Collection and Analysis
• What was the method for collecting the data?
• How was the reliability/validity of the data collection process ensured?
• If there were multiple data collectors for the study, how were the data collectors trained?
• How are the results presented to the reader?
Interpretation of Findings
• Describe the findings in relation to each objective, question, or hypothesis.
• Was there statistical significance? How do you know?
• Was there clinical significance? How do you know?
Limitations of the Study
• Discuss the limitations that were identified by the author.
• What additional limitations can you think of for this study that were not mentioned?
Evaluation of Findings
• What were the major strengths/weaknesses of the study?
• What populations can the findings be generalized and applied to?
• What questions emerged from the findings, and were theyidentified by the researcher?
• What future research can be envisioned? Can the study be replicated by other researchers?
• When the findings are examined with previous studies, what is now known and not known about the study variables?
• How were the findings of this study consistent with those from previous studies?
Conclusion
• Does the author indicate the implication of the findings for practice?
• What are the implications of the findings for nursing practice?
• Final thoughts on what was learned from the study.
