Select ONE DAY of a non-US-based newspaper (or other news source) that has a national or
international readership. SKIM all sections of the entire paper for one day and carefully READ
and EXAMINE a sample of articles. Draw on your reading of the selected newspaper (see
“Newspaper Sources” below) and use specific course concepts and information to analyze HOW
and IN WHAT WAYS we know this is a globalized world.
Specifically, write an essay that considers the following questions:
1. Do the newspaper’s various sections and articles form a coherent view of the world?
For example, can you tell if the newspaper is presenting a particular national, regional,
ethnic, or other view? How can you tell? What aspects (cultural, political, economic,
environmental) or theories or perspectives (e.g., neoliberalism, dependency, -scapes,
racial capitalism, etc.) are evident in the articles you read or the photos or other
features of the news source?
2. Or, alternatively, do you see any contradictions between the various articles and/or
sections of the newspaper. Do you find anything contradictory, or perhaps confused?
3. How might the articles be revised to provide a more global perspective to its readers?
In other words, do you find some aspects of globalization (historical, cultural, political,
economic) missing?
4. In what ways does the one day of one newspaper you chose constitute a kind of
historical artifact of our times, an artifact that future readers might use when studying
representations of globalization in the year 2023?
Be sure to consider cultural, economic, and political dimensions of globalization as you write a
strong, clear and well-organized essay.
Newspaper sources
The first step will be for you to choose a non-US-based newspaper! Choose a national or
international newspaper. For example, the Knoxville News Sentinel is not appropriate for this
assignment. Neither are newswire services like AP or UPI. If you are uncertain about whether a
particular newspaper qualifies, please ask!.
Students with intermediate (or higher) knowledge of a language other than English are highly
encouraged to choose a news source in that language to use their language skills for this
assignment!
