Research Brief Instructions Overview This paper should be approximately 6 pages (not counting the reference section) You will critique the empirical and practice literatures on a topic of your choice related to social work and social work practice to make recommendations for social work practice. Submit your Research Paper here The paper has three sections and a bibliography 1. Introduction (50 points, 1 page) Begin with a statement of your research topic. A few example topics include: the impact of learning disabilities on children’s social development and the implications for school social work interventions; the role of religious coping in recovery from trauma and implications for mental health policy; the impact of parental substance misuse on adolescents; development and the implications for child welfare. Next, discuss the relevant basic and applied empirical research. For example, social science literature identifying the causes of eating disorders, policy research addressing the impact of poverty on adolescent development, or clinical research assessing the effectiveness of a treatment program for men charged with domestic violence. Review a minimum of seven articles for the introduction in peer-reviewed journals addressing this issue. At least 3 of the articles must be from social work journals, for example, Social Work, Social Service Review, Research on Social Work Practice, Child Welfare, Social Work in Health Care, School Social Work Journal, Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work. Include information on any relevant research reviews, e.g. a meta-analysis, a Campbell Collaboration review, or a listing in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. 2. Practice and Policy (50 points, 1 page) Discuss the “best-practice” for addressing your chosen topic. What appears to be the most up-to-date, “state-of-the-art” intervention or policy on your topic? In addition to the journal articles, you may wish to consult books, practice materials such as handbooks and manuals, and experts, for example, a social worker with practice experience in your area of interest. You should review at least 5 sources in addition to those reviewed for the introduction for this section. 3. Critique and Recommendations (50 points, 1 page) Critically discuss the state-of-the-art practice or policy using social work’s bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework. Does the intervention consider the interaction of biological, psychological, social and cultural factors? Has the research considered issues of social diversity? Given this ecological assessment, what are your recommendations for enhancing practice or policy addressing your issue? 4. Reference List (30 points) Be sure to include a reference list formatted in APA style.
