In order to be an active citizen we are required to be aware of
the surrounding power structures and politics that affect us as
individuals. In deciding which type of music we listen to, we
allow certain structures to become a part of us. Discuss why
this does, or why this does not, become such an important part
of our lives. For this exam you must use sources within your class to construct and support your
argument. You must use a total of four sources:
1. On Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau or A Modest Proposal by
Jonathan Swift or Politics and the English Language by George Orwell
2. How We Listen to Music by Aaron Copland
3. One different article on Music from the class.
4. One different article on Music from the class.
Your essay must be at least two pages in length, include a direct quote from each
of these articles within the text and cite properly.

Grading:
Your essay will be graded based on the criteria that appear on the rubric that you have
