Psychology & Film (60 points)
Background: Psychology is all around us. Our culture, society, environment – and all the people within these entities – influences us individuals. In turn, we influence others and our surroundings.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to better understand these social dynamics within psychology and the word around us, reflected in film.
Tasks:
For this assignment, you will be required to select and watch a movie (film) from an established list (below) and you will be required to select one of the main character’s to focus your analysis on. **For an alternative to a movie, see the bottom of this assignment.** You will be analyzing societal and developmental aspects that influence the main character’s psychological development, culture, environment, and various psychological theories at play in the film. Prepare a well-developed, thorough, specific response to each question.
This does NOT need to be in full narrative essay form, though you should use complete sentences. Instead, I want you to use the bulleted format and write out your responses in complete sentences below each bullet point.
Also, you must utilize proper citations throughout the report. In short, if you got the information (words, ideas, or information) from a source, either online or in a book, then you must cite the source using proper APA formatting – even if you reword the information from your source. For this project, you do not need to cite the movie.
Questions:
Q1: Consider the setting of the film (both micro and macro setting details). Describe how society has influenced the development of your selected character. Think of the environment in diverse ways, such as the global environment, the country/region’s social environment, the time in history when the film was set, but also when the film was created. Explain how these social aspects impacted your character (i.e. quality of life, coping strategies, social norms, environmental stressors, etc.). (TBR SLO III) Worth up to 20 points.
Q2: Review the seven modern perspectives of psychology discussed in Chapter 1 of your textbook (Psychodynamic, Behavioral, Humanistic, Cognitive, Biological, Sociocultural, Evolutionary). Next, identify and describe a main character through the lenses of these psychological perspectives. You must analyze your selected character from at least four perspectives. Underline or Bold vocabulary terms used this class. (TBR SLO I) Worth up to 20 points.
Q3: Describe potential etiology (origins and reasons) that MAY contribute to the character(s)’ mental health struggles. What healthy/unhealthy coping mechanisms does the character use? Are any defense mechanisms used? Consider each perspective’s influence (used from Q2) on the character’s development. For instance, if the character suffers from addiction, how would the biological perspective explain the etiology as compared to the behavioral perspective, or the cognitive perspective, etc.? (TBR SLO II) Worth up to 20 points.
Criteria:
In total, this assignment will be worth 60 points (20 points per Q). There is no page requirement or min. word count. However, each question must be answered thoroughly. Don’t be stingy with your explanations/connections. Elaborate.
Each response will be evaluated for mastery of content. Points, however, may be taken off for errors in writing, APA format, failure to follow directions, in addition to content errors or incompleteness of answers. Each question is linked to a TBR Learning Outcome (see syllabus). I need to be able to assess whether or not you mastered each of the applicable outcomes. Be sure to cite your sources!
