CASE SCENARIO
Hasan
In your case allocation meeting the team is discussed a new referral about a well-known family who have been referred several times over the past four years. You are asked to take on responsibility for the family as a social worker in the team. Hasan is a 27-year-old Bangladeshi Muslim man who has been living in the UK since the age of 14. He has a history of mental health problems, which date back to his late teens when his father died. He receives support from a local mental health team and sees a Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) on occasion. One year ago, Hasan travelled to Bangladesh where he and his current wife were married. His wife has recently given birth to a healthy baby girl and there are now six members of the family sharing the 3-bedroom council flat (Hasan’s mother and younger sisters, aged of 12 and 22, comprise the other 3). Hasan is not currently working and receives benefits. His 22-year-old younger sister, Sumi, is the only member of the family who is employed, and she is also Hasan’s carer. Sumi has come into your social work office today and expressed the following concerns:
● Hasan has been complaining that his family do not respect him as the head of the family and that they are not devout enough in their religious practice.
● Lately, Hasan has been waking up in the middle of the night and leaving the flat to go to the Mosque.
● Hasan has, on at least one occasion, threatened Sumi with physical violence.
