Organization
I have included background information on the novel in my intro paragraph, including italicized title (Things Fall Apart), author’s full name (Chinua Achebe), and a brief summary/overview of the novel
My introduction defines key terms that will be discussed in my essay (i.e. toxic masculinity, repression, etc) and provides background information and context about plot and characters related to my argument
My thesis is precise and has a clear cause-effect structure (i.e. Fitzgerald uses class to demonstrate how a person’s morality is chiefly determined by their social status. / Not only does double consciousness inhibit the integration of cultures, it permits the estrangement of individuals within a family unit.)
My topic sentences and thesis follow a similar format. They do not reuse the same idea each time, but build on each other
I include properly cited (pg #) direct quotes in each body paragraph
My D4 and A (topic sentence) in each body paragraph discuss the same ideas but do not repeat the same language from the thesis or D3s.
Each body paragraph ties back to the thesis at the end of the paragraph.
Each quote I have has at least one sentence or phrase before it written in my own words to introduce it (i.e. The character struggles with this and then says, “quote quote quote” (citation).)
My conclusion is not EXACTLY the same as my introduction. It reconsiders and furthers my overall contention.
Analysis
I have named the literary device / FIDDS that the author is using for each point of evidence in my essay
“FIDDS” or “FIDD” appears nowhere in the text of my essay because it is not a real word
I have explained how the literary device / FIDDS SPECIFICALLY applies to the language in my quotations (ex. You cannot simply say there is visual imagery and move on – explain the importance of the D2: “The imagery depicts the comforting smells of home, which illustrates …”)
I have been VERY careful to correctly identify literary devices. I describe the type of diction and consider connotation when discussing diction.
My D3 explains the effect/emotion of the literary device (FIDDS) and clearly ties to my D2.
General Rules and Conventions
I have used the Author’s FULL NAME in the first instance and the LAST NAME thereafter
I have italicized the title of the text (if a novel) EVERY TIME. If it is a shorter text like the title of a chapter I have included quotation marks (“Chapter Title”)
My in-text citations follow the MLA style of (Author’s Last Name #) Ex. (Achebe 16)
I checked to make sure my line spacing, heading, page numbers, etc. are all in line with MLA guidance (12 pt Times New Roman, Double Spaced, & proper heading in upper left corner)
In revising, I have not simply changed terms or individual words, I have altered the analysis and context surrounding those changes
All proper nouns (character names, etc.) are capitalized
I DO NOT write from the “I” perspective at any place in my essay (allowed in intro/conclusions if used sparingly)
I have included transitional words and phrases to help guide my reader from one idea to the next.
