Answer the questions using complete sentences. Your work will be assessed for communication and accuracy of your responses to each question. Take this assignment as an opportunity to practice writing where you make a claim and follow your claim with your justification or support.
Drs. Karen Karp, Sarah Bush and Barbara Dougherty, mathematics education researchers and authors of the article you were assigned to read discusses thirteen “rules that expire.” For each of these rules, they
1. State the rule that teachers share with students.
2. Explain the rule.
3. Discuss how the students inappropriately overgeneralize the rule.
4. Provide examples that prove when the rule is not true (i.e., it expires).
5. State the date or point when the rule begins to fall apart for many learners.
(p. 20 – 21)
Authors explicitly the “expiration date” in terms of grade level (e.g., Grade 5) as well as the Common Core standard number (e.g., 5. NBT.2).
For this assignment, choose any 10, except for rule 3 of the “13 rules that expire” and do the following.
a. Quote the rule
b. Identify the mathematics that children learn that causes that “rule” to fall apart (i.e., expire).
For example,
a. Rule 3. You cannot take a bigger number away from a smaller number.
b. This rule expires then students begin to work with negative numbers. For example, the subtraction problem, 5 – 10, does not make sense when restricted to whole numbers, but makes sense when working with integers.
