Purpose
To assess/explain the trouble with paranormal phenomena in a critical thinking/humanities context.
Overview
In some key aspects, science (the systematically organized body of knowledge we know about the natural or physical world) is about the fundamental laws that govern the universe. And these physical principles define reality for us; they define what is possible. In contrast, paranormal phenomena are about the supernatural, which contradict the natural order of things. And if something contradicts the natural order of things, then it contradicts certain fundamental laws that govern the universe. But if something contradicts certain fundamental laws that govern the universe, then it is physically impossible. Accordingly, paranormal phenomena are events or objects that seem impossible, given science.
Action Items
1. Review the Preface, and pages 14-25 of a text, the images appear below/in an attached PDF. (Source if needed: Schick, T., & Vaughn, L. (2014). How to think about weird things: Critical thinking for a new age. (7th ed.). McGraw-Hill. ISBN: 9780078038365.)
2. View this Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise YouTube video found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlOxlSOr3_M
and then think about how one’s belief in the paranormal or psycho-kinetic may play a role in critical thinking.
3. Using the following deductive argument, substitute a paranormal phenomenon for the variable x
(you may choose the example provided in the coffeeshop video, something from the textbook, an example you find from real life, or something you make up), and analyze and evaluate the resulting argument (i.e., use Critical Thinking).
(1) If x violates certain fundamental laws that govern the universe, then x is physically impossible.
(2) x violates certain fundamental laws that govern the universe.
____________________________________________________________________
(3) Thus, x is physically impossible.
4. Two (2) paragraphs, each about 100 words that address the above in a Critical Thinking context:
ANALYSIS: Examine the structure of the argument in detail and symbolize this structure or component parts.
EVALUATION: Is the deductive argument valid? Is it sound (= valid + true premises)? If sound, tell why the premises are true
