For your final essay, you will be synthesizing information from external sources in order to support your argument. Your first task in the research process will be to read about and research your topic extensively, evaluating what you have read and selecting the most effective sources for your argument. Your sources must be credible, reputable, and appropriate. Additionally, you will be required to demonstrate an ability to incorporate diverse sources into your essay in order to support an original argument. Avoid “dumping” information into your essay that merely seems to fit; don’t force useless or inappropriate information or sources into your argument. Do not merely inform the reader about a problem or solution; argue a point, and support that point with a synthesis of your original ideas and the sources you select. Furthermore, do not allow your sources to do the arguing for you; the argument should be built around your ideas.
Topic: You get to choose the topic for this essay. Anything that interests you academically and personally makes for a great topic. Just be sure to keep the focus argumentative.
