For this assignment, you are required to write a five-page analysis of a scene of your choosing from any movie we watched this quarter. The goal of this project is to build and strengthen your analytical skills and synthesize the language of cinematic expression we have covered in class to this point. A large portion of studying film revolves around our ability to analyze storytelling techniques through the language of filmmaking. This project will give you an excellent opportunity to showcase these skills while giving you a platform to express your particular cinematic sensibilities. In your paper, you should include an opening thesis statement as an introduction. In this, you should bring forth the scene you have chosen for analysis and your argument corresponding to your choice. In other words, what do you hope to say in your analysis? The body of your paper should be a close reading of the particular scene. Here you should briefly describe the essential details of the scene. What happens in the scene? From there you should break down the ideas behind the scene utilizing the cinematic language from our lectures. For example, how do the filmmakers utilize sound, cinematography, editing, and mise-en-scene to achieve their storytelling goals? Ultimately, you should craft a paper that illustrates the ideas behind a scene from this amazing film. You should do some outside research on the film as well. Dive deeper into the story behind the film’s creation. It will undoubtedly assist you. A word of advice: BE SPECIFIC. The more detailed and precise your analysis, the better. Your grade will largely be determined by the coherence and clarity of your understanding of the cinematic language we have discussed in the course. Refer to your lecture notes for inspiration. If you do not utilize the textbook with MLA formatted citations, you will be marked down.
