Whether children have literature read to them or read literature themselves, they are learning important literacy skills. One of your roles as an elementary classroom teacher is to provide a regularly scheduled time for reading and to engage students in a variety of children’s literature genres.
For this assessment, you will create a lesson plan that demonstrates the benefit of using a children’s literature genre in the curriculum to support students’ literacy skills.
Scenario
As a new third grade teacher, you have just learned that you will be evaluated in 3 weeks by the principal of your school. The principal stated that he wants to observe a reading lesson that incorporates a children’s literature genre and requested that you provide a justification for using the specific genre to support the targeted literacy skill.
Preparation
Refer to the Children’s Literature Genre Lesson Plan Template and review the reading standard and literacy skill that have been selected for you as the basis of this assessment.
Consider the genre(s) and types of books that support the identified standard and literacy skill and select a genre and a book from that genre that you will incorporate into your lesson.
Assessment Deliverable
Use the Children’s Literature Genre Lesson Plan Template and create a lesson in which you incorporate the genre and book you selected into a lesson for teaching the pre-selected reading standard and literacy skill identified in the template.
