Directions:Discussion – Comparing Art
A useful exercise when looking at artwork is comparing and contrasting different pieces. Listing the similarities and differences between two pieces of artwork reveals the different choices each artist makes.
Initial PostChoose a second artwork from the Course Project Gallery and compare it to the artwork you chose for the “Module 02 Assignment: Observing and Transcribing.” In your initial post, describe all the similarities and differences between the two artworks, for instance, in the Subjects and Formal Elements. Be sure to use the Key Terms you have learned from the readings.
Reply PostExplain how reviewing the comparing and contrasting list created by your classmate affected how you viewed the pieces of artwork or if it revealed something about the choices made by the artist.

Assignment – Observing and Transcribing
Assignment OverviewFor this assignment, you will select one (1) piece of artwork from the Course Project Gallery in this module. You will focus on this same piece of artwork for the assignments in Modules 02, 03, 04, and 05.
Download and review the artwork in the Course Project Gallery. For this assignment, you have submission options. However, for this assignment, you will also need to include a sketch of your chosen artwork regardless of the selected option. You will also need to make notes within the sketch about art elements such as color and texture. You will NOT be graded on your drawing skills for this sketch! This is just a perceptual exercise to help you really see the details of your chosen work of art. The sketching process helps you see the work on a deeper level and will make the writing process much easier. In other words, sketch everything you see, but don’t worry if it “looks good” when you’re done.DirectionsSketch the chosen piece of artwork.
Next to your sketch, include all the caption information about your chosen artwork: artist, title, medium, dimensions and year.
List everything you see, no matter how trivial or obvious. Do not assume that everyone sees what you see. Follow the example in Module 02 Lecture, “Exercise in Looking.”
List all the questions you have about the artwork. Whatever comes to mind. The questions can be about the items that you see (e.g., “What does the candle represent?”), or they can be about the artwork in general (e.g., “Why is the painting shades of blue instead of normal colors?”). There is no need to find the answers yet—simply focus on asking good questions.
