Plan and prioritize evidence-based care for a client admitted with a new diagnosis of
gastroenteritis and dehydration.
Use clinical reasoning to promote a positive outcome for a client who has gastroenteritis
and dehydration.
Identify important nursing considerations for medications used in treating children who
have dehydration.
Communicate effectively and therapeutically with a client and family of a client who has
a diagnosis of gastroenteritis and is positive for salmonella.
Complete an accurate and effective SBAR communication.
Describe teaching considerations for the client and family experiencing salmonella
infection, and prevention measures including safe food handling.
Scenario Overview: This scenario focuses on a 4-year-old child who has a diagnosis of
gastroenteritis and dehydration. It incorporates client- centered concepts related to isolation
precautions, which students will be required to implement. Nursing-focused concepts include
using SBAR for interprofessional communication, and making priority decisions as to the next
step following an admission assessment
