Your rough draft for the Research Project requires careful thought and planning. Your Research Project is not an argumentative essay, meaning you aren’t tasked with persuading your audience, but rather raising a question, learning more about that question, informing your audience of the context, and arriving at a possible solution or conclusion.
You will seek connections between the information you discover during your research and the potential significance to your topic, identified audiences, and further inquiry. Your thorough research of multiple sources, and full analysis of your findings, will be the foundation from which you develop your essay.
The following types of research must be incorporated into your essay:
• Primary sources
• Secondary sources
• Qualitative data
• Quantitative data
• Scholarly sources
• Popular media sources relevant to your topic
At this time, there should be a clear outline of sections with your subtopics; the controlling idea (thesis statement) should be understood; and citations/information paraphrased. There should be areas where you have evidence from your sources as well as anlaysis that shows your critical thinking skills.
The Rough Draft should follow this criteria:
• 2-3 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font (standard one-inch margins).
• 2-3 sources (primarily scholarly)
• MLA or APA documentation (in-text and end-of text citation)—choose one and use consistently.
