All of the postings should be thoughtful and reflective of your course materials and clinical experiences-as indicated. Your initial post must be posted before you can view and respond to colleagues, must contain THREE (3) references, in addition to examples from your personal experiences to augment the topic. The goal is to make your posts interesting and engaging so others will want to read/respond to it. Synthesize and summarize from your resources in order to avoid over use of direct quotes, which can often be dry and boring.
Choose ONE of the following questions to respond to. Identify which question you are discussing, but please feel free to read the discussion posts related to the other questions.
1. An undocumented, uninsured migrant worker is seen in your emergency department (or clinic) with shortness of breath and occasional, intermittent chest pain. It is determined that he most likely will need additional workup and possible surgery for a pacemaker. BUT being eligible for Medicaid because of his immigration status, and no way to pay for this surgery, what is your responsibility? What is the hospital’s responsibility? Should the patient be involved in the decision-making process? Is there concern about justice, beneficence and allocation of scarce resources?
2. You have been invited by a pharmaceutical company to lead an informal discussion on a new medication or procedure involving new equipment. The discussion will be held in a restaurant and will be hosted by the company. You are offered $1000 to help recruit attendees and lead the discussion. What ethical issues are involved? Are there any legal or professional concerns? Would this be a conflict of interest with your employer who doesn’t promote this product?
