Quoting the assignment instructions:
“In your Synthesis & Reflection submissions, only use evidence from assigned readings and lecture videos in your responses. Include in-text citations for the sources used, whether videos, lectures, readings, weekly notes, etc. Avoid including lengthy quotes. Instead, paraphrase and explain the relevance and significance of the selected passages or video segments in your own words as much as possible. When paraphrasing or summarizing a source, also cite it with an in-text citation. Use quotation marks when you are citing words that are not your own. For your in-text citations, give the author’s name and the page number, if there is one. You do not need to have a Works Cited page because you are only using course resources.”
To repeat, do NOT include a Works Cited page, but you DO need to include in-text citations for any facts, evidence, and arguments that you get from one of your sources.
Below are my guidelines on how to cite your sources for this assignment, with sample citations included (Please note that Canvas messages don’t allow me to use italics, but the titles of the complete works should be italicized in MLA style):
I. on Duty (contrasts):
1. In MLA style generally, we cite the chapter and verse numbers for religious texts, rather than page numbers. However, to simplify things for the Midterm Reflection, if you wish you can just cite the page number, if you have the 1986 publication listed in the syllabus:

2. In the source selections for the Islamic tradition from Week 6, there are actually three different sources combined in the edited compilation Sacred Texts of the World. The contemporary scholars Smart and Hecht, who compiled these texts, give an introduction to each of the Five Pillars of Islam, in addition to other important values. They then present the excerpts of the religious texts themselves to illustrate these concepts. If you paraphrase one of the authors’ introductions to each of these themes, you should cite Smart and Hecht themselves:

However, if you are citing the actual religious texts themselves, make sure to indicate which of the two original texts you are drawing from:

“Sura” refers to chapter in Arabic. If you cite a Hadith (not part of the Qur’an itself), please just give the page number. Make sure to cite actual excerpts from the Qur’an and/or Hadith, not just the introductions by Smart and Hecht.
3. Again, for the readings on Confucianism from Week 5, you will need to distinguish the original sources:
For the “Confucius” reading, make sure to distinguish the original text from the Analects by Confucius from the introduction by modern scholars De Bary et al:

Again, you want to make sure to cite the primary source by Confucius in your answer. Any direct quotes should be from Confucius, whereas any contextual or analytical evidence attributed to De Bary at al., if you decide to use them, should be paraphrased.
Similarly, make sure to distinguish the sources in the reading compiled by Ebrey:

Do not cite Ebrey for the work of these two authors, but rather the original philosophers themselves.
II. on Joy, Pleasure, and Satisfaction (comparisons):
The same advice from above applies to the sources for Part 2 of the Midterm Reflection prompt. Like I said above, in MLA style we generally cite chapters and verses for religious texts, but if you want to just use page numbers for this assignment, that’s fine (again, the titles should be italicized, as Canvas messages don’t allow me to here):
