The topic I’ve decided to work on is “Code-Switching” between White standard English and black “language”. Some conversations that would exist around my topic would be “african americans always need to interchange between languages to fit in”, some people may have a debate (which is why im talking about this topic), Code switching isn’t only for african american but it impacts more African americans than White american. Some gaps that I notice are knowledge gaps. Some context I would need to give my reader would be (as annoying as it is) giving them maybe 1 page or two worth of june jordan, giving them the background of who she is, what she did to her students, and how that connects to code switching. Something else I would need to inform them on is what code switching is. A question I’m trying to ask would be “ how does code switching affect African Americans from the age of 14 and older . In order to explore, some research methods would google, readings, videos (from youtube). A most helpful source would probably be the june jordan reading, google, a reading on how code switching affect an african american over the age of 20 and another personal essay from a college student (if i find one) but it gives off an example of an african american code switching to fit in the community (school, work, life, etc). The most effective approach would to be also tell sotries rather than lecture.
The purpose of my research is to ensure and bring awareness to people that African Americans are being overly judged because of their race, tone, pattern of speech and code switching everyday is pretty much exhausting ( but overall, just bring awareness). My primary audience would be professors, job companies, and the police force. My research paper is important because code-switching for us could be the most professional way to receive the things we need , and if we dont code-switch it can get us killed (hench trayvon martin smh rip). The format I would probably choose would be something I choose later because I have no idea. The tone of my paper would be an assertive tone and informational. I hope that my readers just think that African American students and adults don’t struggle enough with something that may sound small but actually is big. Noone have to do anything but I just hope that my readers just understand that the way we speak isn’t because we’re mad, we just have forceful, bold and stern attitude and if we dont code- switch 99.99% chance someone would come along thinking we have an attitude and would kill us (something i’m teaching my kids) and once again hence trayvon martin. My essay might be scholarship material but I would have to make it into scholarship material. (if i answered that right.)
