1. Read “A Friedman doctrine‐- The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits”

2. Take half a page to explain why you agree or disagree with Friedman.
3. Then summarize the opposing opinion in one page (that is, summarize the arguments that take

Good sources will be:

Express-News, etc. written by experts (economists, sociologists, business professors, CEOs of
major corporations).
-articles in major magazines like Time, Newsweek, Fortune and the Atlantic Monthly that focus
on this issue, especially if they quote experts.

There is a so-called ESG movement. Much has been written about this so you should be able to
find sources. Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) data refers to metrics
related to intangible assets within the enterprise, a form of corporate social credit score. (From

4. Then spend one page explaining what you learned from exploring and researching the
opposing side. Explain how this changed your mind or forced you to better justify your initial
opinion.
5. Then they take half a page to say how you think society can make business more socially
responsible based on either Friedman’s article and/or the sources you found. You might discuss
how you, working with other individuals, could help make business more socially responsible.
This discussion can incorporate elements from the Friedman article and/or the sources that you
found.
