The essay you need to comment on:
After reading the works of Jane Addams, Booker T. Washington, and W.E.B. DuBois, collaboration is the underlying theme. The speech and two works, though different in topic, make light of the fundamental need for cooperation.
Addams used Hull House, a center in Chicago’s poor section which supplied assorted services to the community, to describe the deficiency of democracy and its impact on the disenfranchised. She raises the point of the American promise, or lack thereof, of equality for all. Instead, in this case, the poor have been socially spurned. They must labor to make ends meet and for the small pleasures of life that men of means and affluence can so easily obtain. The young are the ones most affected by this slight. They long for community with all, a sense of belonging, a comradery with the establishment. What they find instead is exclusion, a feeling of abandonment and longing. She shares what she has seen, young girls who have become disheartened and lose hope for the future without help or a push from society. Addams called for more settlements like Hull House where community, social engagement, and belonging could foster the minds of the young through collaboration.
Washington, a former slave, and founder of Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute delivered a speech in 1895 emphasizing the need for cooperation between the Negro race and those from the South. He emphasized the need for cooperation in all areas such as farming and business. He asked fellow Negros to lay down the injustice they suffered as a path to prosperity, learning and opportunities they did not have before. And from the white man he requested an openness to work together with Negros in the name of progress.
That which Washington proposed, DuBois denounced. He asserted that Washington called for Negros to give in to the white man’s way by forgoing their rights and quest for education. He believed Washingtons’ stance set the Negro community back instead of uniting both sides to work towards progress and economic development.
Addams, Washington, and DuBois had their own viewpoint on their respective topic but cooperation between the masses resonates from their work. Without partnership there is no advancement.
The Two readings they summarized and provided afterthought on:

Jane Addams, “The Subjective Necessity for Social Settlements” (1892)

Booker T. Washington & W.E.B. DuBois on Black Progress (1895, 1903)
