Write an 800-1,000-word essay that addresses the following question: How do medical professionals, public health officials, birth workers, or scientists utilize social media and other digital media to increase scientific literacy?
According to the United States National Center for Education Statistics, “scientific literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity”. A scientifically literate person is defined as one who has the capacity to:
Understand, experiment, and reason as well as interpret scientific facts and their meaning.
Ask, find, or determine answers to questions derived from curiosity about everyday experiences.
Describe, explain, and predict natural phenomena.
Read articles with an understanding of science in the popular press and engage in social conversation about the validity of the conclusions.
Identify scientific issues underlying national and local decisions and express positions that are scientifically and technologically informed.
Evaluate the quality of scientific information on the basis of its source and the methods used to generate it.
Pose and evaluate arguments based on evidence and to apply conclusions from such arguments appropriately.
Scientific literacy may also be defined in language similar to the definitions of ocean literacy,[4]Links to an external site. Earth science literacy and climate literacy. Thus, a scientifically literate person can:
Understand the science relevant to environmental and social issues.
Communicate clearly about the science.
Make informed decisions about these issues.
Scientifically literate citizens are capable of researching matters of fact for themselves.

Requirements
In order to support your claim, please use evidence (quotations, paraphrasing, and summary) from at least four of our readings, digital media, documentaries, or speakers from the semester thus far.
At least three of the four categories must be present in your essay In other words, you’ll want to avoid using four documentary examples with no examples from digital media or readings, etc.
You’ll also want to provide at least one social media or other digital media example related to one of the topics in our class that you observe and find independently. You’ll want to observe and discuss not just the information that is circulated by the medical professional, public health official, etc. but also the way that the audience is communicating with that information via hashtags, emojis, and/or commentary.
For example, if a doula posts something about childbirth options, you’re observing not only the information she posts but also how others engage with her. You want to be specific with quotes from those comments, including emojis, and explain their meaning and significance.
Lastly, I encourage you to choose one topic to focus on (i.e. ocean health, public health, childbirth advocacy, etc.).
Please submit your essay in an attachment (no links) Word document or PDF written in 12pt font and APA format.
