When you write an analytical research essay, you are presenting your thoughts, your conclusions, and evaluations on a topic based on what you’ve learned from your research. You are saying, now that I have read all of these sources here is what I think and here is why. You are using the ideas and words of others (your sources from the annotated bibliography) to say what you think, to back up what you think. You are not simply restating what others have said: you are using what others have said to write about what you think of the issue. What you think is your thesis statement. The premise here is that you are a critical thinker with something to say. This essay is asking you to speak with a sense of authority: Once you do the research and think about the issue, what you have to say matters just as much as what others (the people you read) have to say. Your essay should have the following sections: 1. INTRODUCTION An introduction that introduces your topic and a thesis statement. An introduction that introduces your topic and tells the reader what you have to say about the issue. This ends with a thesis statement stating your position on the topic. 2. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE This section introduces the reader to the ongoing conversation around your research and towards the end leads the reader towards your analysis. Use the information from your Annotated Bibliography to help with this section. 3. YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE ISSUE Your analysis of the issue is your own informed opinion, it is what you think now that you have read all of these sources. As you develop this section, think about the paragraphs that you will write. What are the key points you want to make to develop your analysis (what you think)? Each of your points has to be informed by your research. This means you will need to engage your sources in each paragraph of your analysis. 4. A CONCLUSION You will need a thoughtful and developed conclusion that discusses why this matters; why we should care about this; what is the exigency of this issue/topic. You should leave the reader with a sense that you have done some careful thinking about your topic and with something to think about. If you want, you can develop your conclusion as a recommendation. In other words, you can offer a process (a series of steps) or a series of guidelines to be followed in order to change or improve the situation: You can use the conclusion to discuss what you think we should do about the issue or what you think should be done. Make sure: Make sure that you have focused body paragraphs that are fully developed with the use of your sources to support your thesis. Each of your body paragraphs has to be based on your research. 5. WORKS CITED PAGE The Works Cited page will be the list of references used in the paper. Remember, you have already done this for the Annotated Bibliography so utilize that and copy it to your Works Cited page
