Week Four Assessment: Fiction Analysis Contest
Directions for Part One:
For this assignment, you will be writing an essay of 1,500 to 2,000 words. You have two topics to choose from.
Option One:
You have read my Fairy Tale Introduction, and tales by German, French, and Dutch authors. Choose two of the three fairy tales and compare their use of fairy tale themes and conventions, as noted in my overview. You must fully cite both my overview and the stories in question.
Option Two:
You have read my two slideshows on Gothic Romanticism, as well as a German and American short story that treats the dangers of human pride and disrespect for nature. Compare Hoffmann and Hawthorne’s work as indicative of Gothic Romantic themes and conventions, as noted in my slideshow. You must fully cite both my slideshow and the stories in question.
Whichever option you choose, your analysis must treat the following points:
Specific examples of Romantic (including Gothic or fairy tale) characterization. Make sure we know exactly what specific trait you are providing evidence of and analyzing.
Details of the setting that are used symbolically. Be very clear and specific about how the symbol can be interpreted. Relate it to a specific aspect of Romanticism or Gothic Romanticism or the Gothic Fairy Tale.
Analysis of specific symbols and how they contribute to the work. Be very clear and specific about how the symbol can be interpreted and how that interpretation relates to your chosen theme.
You must use direct quotes to show your readers’ what pages you are analyzing, and you must use correct parenthetical and bibliographic citations. MLA counts as 1/3 of the assignment grade. If your pages are not numbered, use the print preview feature on your computer to determine what page you are referencing. Do not use any sources other than the story you are writing about and my e-lectures for this class. It’s your interpretation that matters here!
Keep the tone formal: Don’t use first person. Don’t tell us why you chose the work, or use phrases like “In my opinion, this means . . . ” It is already implied that it is your opinion, and first person is too informal. This is one of the things to watch out for listed on your peer and self review prompts handout. Trust those prompts to keep you on the right track!

For Part Two:
After the 11:59 deadline has passed, and before 11:59 PM the next evening, go into the discussion board and read all of the entries. Then, “like” the three entries that you believe are the best written. They must be from three separate students. Evaluate the quality of the writing for both mechanical proficiency and the depth of the ideas. The two entries that receive the most votes will earn five extra credit points. Please make sure to wait until the deadline has passed, so everyone has a chance to win. Please read all of them, so you do not give an unfair advantage to the earlier submissions.
